1. General information
This subject is part of the teaching framework of English for Specific Purposes, whose contents are focused on the physiotherapist's profession
In the classes we work on the four skills (reading, writing, speaking, listening) so that the student can communicate in written and oral form
The subject is taught in English, and the level of requirement is equivalent or superior to B1 of the European Framework of Reference . Students work in pairs or groups to encourage collaborative work. The student is provided with the necessary self-learning tools and the process of self-evaluation or peer evaluation is encouraged.
These approaches and objectives are aligned with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda of United Nations (https://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/es/). The acquisition of the learning results of the subject enables to contribute to some extent to the achievement of Goal 3 (health and well-being).
2. Learning results
In order to pass this subject, the students shall demonstrate they has acquired the following results:
1. Use English in the area of physiotherapy through the functions of scientific registration at an intermediate/high level (B1- B2/European reference framework).
2. Know the characteristics of scientific English, a language that will be essential in the development of their professional functions.
3. Is able to express themselves in writing and communicate with specialists in their professional field in English. Is able to request information on seminars, scholarships, Erasmus exchanges and congresses held in English.
4. Possesses the general reading comprehension skills to understand and interpret scientific texts.
5. Knows how to write paragraphs, which respond to different needs and which are used in the professional communication of the discipline.
6. Knows the specific vocabulary specific to physiotherapy in English and is able to elaborate their own glossary.
7. Is able to express themselves orally to present topics related to their specialty.
3. Syllabus
MASTER LESSONS
- Physiotherapy. Anatomy.
- Physical examination. Pain. Anaesthesia. Health problems.
- Vocabulary. Phrasal verbs related to health. Word formation: nouns. Two-word expressions. Plural formation. Opposites. Prepositions. Instruments and equipment.
- Terminology. Components of medical words: prefix, word root, combining vowel and suffix. Reading and understanding medical words
- Curriculum Vitae. Guidelines for writing a CV (Europass)
- Listening comprehension. Videos and lectures related to health issues. Pronunciation exercises
- Writing. Physiotherapy case notes
PRACTICE SESSIONS
1. Communication with patients (greeting the patient, introducing the physiotherapist's role and setting the agenda)
2. Patient records (identify the most important components of a medical history).
3. Presenting complaint, examination, diagnosis and treatment plan

5. Assessment system
CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT
Written exam (for those who attend the practices): understanding and writing in English, specific vocabulary, definition of medical terminology, expressing instructions, making descriptions and writing paragraphs and translating texts of their specialty.
It is worth 60% of the final grade and must be passed in order to average with the rest of the grades. A minimum grade of 3.5 out of 6 must be obtained.
Listening test: on a topic related to the field of physiotherapy: 20% of the final grade
Both parts (written exam and oral comprehension test) will be taken on the same day and are equivalent to 80% of the total grade.
Class participation and preparation of activities recommended by the teacher: to be assessed when adjusting the grade or awarding an honours grade.
Practices: Participation will be valued.
Making an oral presentation or videos on a topic of their discipline.
It is equivalent to 20% of the final grade of the subject.
Students who do not pass the exam in the first call must sit for the comprehensive exam in the next call.
GLOBAL EXAMINATION
Students who have not attended the practical classes: global exam where to demonstrate the knowledge related to all the content of the subject, including the theoretical and practical classes.
It will take place at the same time as the official written exam and the student will take an oral test in English on topics included in the subject.
